๐ง Creating Calm with a Mind Jar ๐ง
In a busy classroom, it can be challenging for children to manage their emotions, especially when they feel overwhelmed, excited or another big feeling. One simple yet powerful tool I love using is the Mind Jar. ๐ Iโve made many of these over the years with children, and each time, Iโm reminded of how this creative and hands-on activity can help then pause, reflect and reset.
Whatโs a Mind Jar?
A Mind Jar is a clear jar filled with water, glue and glitter. I also like to add in little coloured 'gems' to represent different memories we might have. When shaken, the glitter swirls, mimicking a busy, scattered mind. As the glitter settles, it represents calmness, showing children how taking time to pause can help their own โmind glitterโ settle too.
Why Itโs Useful in the Classroom
Emotional Regulation: Watching the glitter slowly settle can be a soothing activity, helping children practice patience and regain focus.
Mindfulness: This visual aid makes abstract feelings more tangible, supporting children in understanding and managing their emotions.
A Calming Activity: The process of making and using a Mind Jar is engaging and hands-on, which is ideal for young learners.
How to Use It
Try introducing the Mind Jar during transition times, after playtime or anytime children seem particularly restless. Simply let them give the jar a gentle shake and watch as the glitter gradually settles โ just like their thoughts. Itโs a great way to encourage quiet reflection and a moment of calm.
